Priming young minds for technology
The 2008 Smart Young Mindz Challenge seeks to stimulate Gauteng high school pupils' interest in maths, science, technology and entrepreneurship.
It seeks to attain this by encouraging participating pupils to submit smart business ideas through an annual competition.
It also motivates pupils to investigate problems in their communities and to generate ideas for products or services that will fill a gap in their local markets.
The pupils are also required to work as researchers, analysts and implementation teams to help solve South Africa's 2010 Soccer World Cuprelated marketing, tourism and communications posers by:
l Developing a slang dictionary that incorporates at least 100 words and sayings - with clear meanings as well as examples of the context in which the words and sayings are used.
These must be purely South African but can incorporate any of the indigenous languages, with the meanings in English; and
l Highlight Gauteng's reputation as one of the most politically and culturally unique regions in the country. For the environmental affairs phase of the challenge, the Smart Young Mindz contestants will be required to:
l Innovate alternative power sources that would help circumvent instances like the current power outages. It must also provide relief for people who cannot afford electricity, gas and solar energy.
l Provide a water-recycling solution to challenges such as the prevalence of E.coli and germs.
l Smart Young Mindz is a nation-building project of Blue IQ, Gauteng education department and Sowetan, which has "adopted" the challenge as an activity of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
