Mbulaeni "Silver Bullet" Mulaudzi is eager to repeat the feat he achieved at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2004 by winning a gold medal in this year's event in Spain this weekend.
The championships start in Valencia tomorrow and end on Sunday.
Mulaudzi, who is ranked number one in the 800m by the IAAF, the world athletics governing body, won a gold medal in Budapest and a silver in Russia in 2006. He is determined to again go for glory.
"My goal is to win a gold medal the way I did in 2004. Having qualified for the Olympic Games already and won my race in Oudtshoorn last week, I feel confident and I am fit for the competition in Spain," Mulaudzi said.
"This is despite the fact that I have not competed on the indoor circuit this year."
Mulaudzi leads a South African trio that also comprises long jumpers Khotso Mokoena and Janice Josephs. Johan Cronje, who runs in the 1500m event, was forced out by an injury.
The athletes will be accompanied by manager Ekkart Arbeit and physiotherapist Theo Calligeris and were due to leave for Spain last night.
They return on February 10.
Molatelo "Professor" Malehopo, Athletics South Africa's development manager, believes the three athletes are capable of winning medals in Spain.
"We are sending athletes whom we strongly believe have a good chance of winning a medal or at least progressing to the finals in their respective events in the championships," Malehopo said.
"It is best to send a few athletes who will deliver. It is unfortunate that Cronje failed to make it to Spain because of injury.
"He is in a good form looking at his recent campaign in the indoors meetings and he was also our medal hopeful," Malehopo added.
Mokoena and Josephs are in fine fettle after achieving the Olympic B standard at the Yellow Pages Series in Germiston two weeks ago.
