More than 50 Vaal University of Technology (VUT) students in Vanderbijlpark are to face charges of malicious damage to property and gathering illegally following their arrest yesterday.

VUT corporate communication manager Babini Maneli said the institution had applied for an urgent court interdict to stop the students from rioting and damaging property.

Police yesterday moved in, fired rubber bullets and arrested the students as they protested on the campus grounds.

Unofficial reports said 10 students were admitted to hospital after they were injured during the stampede that followed the arrival of the police.

On Monday students boycotted classes and demonstrated over unreasonable fee increases, financial exclusion and lack of proper accommodation.

They demanded that vice-chancellor Irene Moutlana resign with immediate effect.

Maneli said: "We have not yet received a list of demands from students. They opted to send their demands to the education ministry."

One of the students, who asked for anonymity, said: "The police chased us all over campus and searched room by room for students."

He said more than 10 students were taken to the Sebokeng Hospital after sustaining injuries.
