People in Mpumalanga's Nkomazi area will no longer have to travel long distances to attend computer schools after the opening of a computer college in the vicinity.
Nkomazi Municipality yesterday officially opened Build the Nation Computer College at Tonga Trust near Komatipoort.
Dignitaries from the municipality and teachers from local schools were present at the official launch.
"We hope that our people from various places will have full access to computer classes now that a new college has been set up in our vicinity," said Nkomazi mayor Johan Mavuso during the opening ceremony.
In the past, people from the more than 40 villages in the area were forced to travel as far as Nelspruit or Witbank to attend computer classes.
The managing director of the college, Isaiah Shabangu, was happy that his college had finally opened.
"I started my business in 2002 as a computer centre," Shabangu said.
"But I was forced to extend my business into a college due to the growing number of students flocking to my centre.
"I now have classes that can accommodate more than 50 students."
This is the first computer college to be launched in the impoverished area.
One of the students, Mfanzile Magagula, said: "We are giving Shabangu the thumbs-up for bringing us a college in our area."
