On August 31, 1997, the lives of Diana, the Princess of Wales, Dodi Al Fayed and their driver Henri Paul brutally ended in a fatal accident. Since that day, countless conspiracy theories have emerged concerning the events leading to their deaths.
I have read several books and watched TV documentaries on that tragic event but David Cohen's Diana: Death of a Goddess is the best read I have come across.
It is an exhaustive investigative work that challenges most theories about what happened on that fateful Sunday morning.
The book is an inspiration. For a showbiz journo who earns a living by peeping into other people's lives, the method in which the story is investigated leaves me with goose bumps.
Regardless of whether you buy into some of the conspiracy theories or not, Cohen's book is a thought-provoking read. The picture he paints about the paparazzi and the investigation he made into Diana's death grips the reader's imagination.
The book also provides new information about the fatal accident - although Cohen does not claim to know everything that happened that night.
The author, who is also a psychologist and filmmaker, provides a moving analysis of Di's sorrowful marriage, her eating disorder, her often unsuitable men-friends and her extraordinary charity work - from supporting Aids victims to opposing the use of landmines.
Accident or not, Cohen in his book asks key questions about the couple's final hours that may never be satisfactorily answered.
Once you pick the book up, it is near impossible to put it down.
