Perseverance is the mother of success and this old adage held true for top runner Johannes Kekana.

This after the Limpopo-born marathoner won the annual Dis-Chem Half Marathon at the Bedforview Country Club yesterday after six years of unsuccessful attempts.

He covered the gruelling 21.1km course in a time of 1 hour 06 minutes 39 seconds and went on to collect the R3 000 first prize.

Hot on his heels was Ntombeka Mtintso of Gauteng Striders Athletic Club who clocked in at 1:07:10 while Leburu Kgosiemang came in third 14 seconds later (1:07:24).

Mtintso and Kgosiemang received R1 500 and R750 respectively.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday, an exhausted and thrilled Kekana said: " I did not want to throw-in the towel because I knew that one day my day would come to lift the title despite being unsuccessful for the past six years.

"It was a great warm-up for me ahead of the opening of the Nedbank Matha series on Saturday (Jan 20) in Pretoria.''

In the women's section, Tabitha Tsatsa from Tshwane took the laurels in 1:16:10 and Dimakatso Menong came second in 1:23:05 while third spot went to Yolande Maclean in 1:23:43.
