Mwelase over the moon with award
Boxing promoter Mohloyoa "Blacky" Seoe is over the moon with the achievements of his newly signed fighter, SA and WBC International champion Bongani Mwelase.
The talented, dexterous fighter from Soweto, who calls himself "Cyclones", was voted SAB sports personality of 2007 last week.
Mwelase, 25, pipped Springbok star Bryan Habana, former Boks coach Jake White and esteemed boxing trainer Nick Durandt.
The ceremony took place in Free State last Friday night.
"I am delighted to have such a shining star in my stable. This is only the beginning," warned Seoe, who operates under the banner of Robs Boxing Promotions.
Mwelase said winning the award confirmed his claim of being "Mr Boxing".
"I am the only boxer who was nominated in there. That shows that I am being noticed inside and outside the ring.
"This also says I am a living legend and a brand," said the straight-talking fighter, whose skills are honed by Johnny du Plooy.
Last year Mwelase won Boxing South Africa's prospect of 2006 award.
He left boxing fans at Wembley Arena gazing in disbelief last month with his adroitness when he outclassed Lucky Lewele for both the South African and WBC International welterweight belts.
That fight - a brutal 12-round slug fest - is a hot favourite for Boxing SA's fight of 2007 award.
Meanwhile, promoter Mzimase Mnguni of Eyethu Boxing Promotions was one of the four sporting personalities who received the Steve Tshwete lifetime achievement award, also on Friday.
