West Rand executive mayor Faith Matshikiza lashed out at Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and MEC for arts and culture Barbara Creecy during Heritage Day celebrations at Maropeng yesterday.

In her welcome address Matshikiza told the startled audience of more than 800 people that Creecy had no ancestors and heritage.

She said she did not know how to welcome Shilowa because his clan's praises were uncelebrated and not within the range of her knowledge.

"I am black and have ancestors, MEC Creecy is white and has no ancestors. I am Buthelezi, Shenge. If Shilowa's praises were known I would have welcomed him accordingly," Matshikiza said.

In his main address, a visibly irritated Shilowa said heritage should not be interpreted the way individuals wished.

"The mayor must not come here and tell us she cannot sing other people's praises. What should unite us is a need to build a nonracial society."

Shilowa took a full minute singing his clan's praises in Tsonga to the fascinated audience.

"We should move away from tribal identities that were used previously as a source of division.

"There is nothing wrong with belonging to a certain tribe but that should not be used as a source of division," said Shilowa.

He said people came to Gauteng from different provinces to earn a living.

"We must not defecate on the fountain, because one day we will need that water," he said.

Shilowa also urged parents to be involved in their children's lives.

"Things that our children are involved in are disturbing and as parents we need to get involved," he said.
