Top businesspeople and professionals will throng the Soweto Country Club in Pimville to take part in the Soweto Festival Golf Classic tomorrow.

The event, the first of its kind, is bound to attract a lot of golfers on the day.

The tournament will be played on a four-ball alliance with two scores to count.

The purpose is to network, expose and improve the course - the only one in the area.

Tournament organiser Jimmy Headbush said they intended to make the event a yearly affair.

"The event will be contested mainly by whites and we would like to expose the course to white businesspeople," he said.

"The golf course itself is not up to scratch and we want the whites to play and experience the hardships the disadvantaged community are experiencing in Soweto."

Headbush added that their aim was also to encourage youngsters to get involved in the game.

Davis Diphoko, the captain's committee chairman, said they were delighted to see businesspeople showing an interest in playing golf at the course.

"We'll be helping these business people with how to score and also supply them with experienced caddies. We believe we'll benefit from the event," he said.

The Classic tees off at 8am and entry fee is R250 a player. Companies that will be represented include De Beers, Standard Bank and the IDC.

Players who will be taking part include Sisa Mbuli, Jonathan Jordaan, Caroline Lepal and Leon Mkwasu.
