Thobile Mhlahlo, MEC for safety, liaison, roads and transport, said well-serviced roads will help in their quest to host a successful and memorable tournament.
Mhlahlo said they needed to accelerate the development and also implement programmes to reduce the deaths on the roads.
"With the implementation of the National Road Safety Strategy under way, we are observing with great interest the impact this strategy will have on the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals for the transport sector and goals that are highlighted in the Asgisa [Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa] project, which include 50 percent reduction of fatalities by 2014," said Mhlahlo.
"Road accidents continue to frustrate development as they usually take away our loved ones, who are mostly active participants in the economy.
"There are a number of young people who have entered the job market and have bought new cars. This means our road network is dominated by inexperienced drivers, who pose a huge risk to other road users."
Mhlahlo said they have already started with the recapitalisation of old taxis and the government was investing R7,7 billion in the project.
"We are further making visible and decisive interventions in improving conditions of buses."
