Pupils reject extra classes, stone teachers
While most pupils in KwaZulu- Natal consider themselves lucky that schools opened a week early, pupils at Zwelithini High School in Eshowe refusing to comply with this plan.
On Friday teachers at the school were assaulted when pupils refused to attend Saturday classes to catch up on time lost to the public servants' strike.
The pupils allegedly stoned teachers, blaming them for the strike and the time lost.
South African Democratic Teachers Union spokesman Sipho Nkosi confirmed the incident.
He blamed "a small group of rotten apples who do not understand the purpose of the extra classes" for the incident.
The provincial Department of Education was not available for comment.
