A determined SA Emerging Women's Sevens team successfully defended the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) Cup after defeating Uganda 20-7 in the final at Kyadondo Rugby Club, Kampala, at the weekend.

But it was not an easy match for the South Africans who had to bounce back in the second half after hosts Uganda had enjoyed a comfortable 7-0 lead at the break with a try from Christine Kizito and Rachael Kakaire's conversion.

South Africa came back strongly in the second stage and forced their opponents to commit blunders in their 22m area.

They were rewarded with two tries from Natasha Hofmeester to take a 10-7 lead.

Lamla Mowoti and Nomtha Xape dashed Uganda's title hopes with a try apiece.

Hofmeester, who excelled with her kicking game, grabbed the player of the tournament award.

It was not a good weekend for Uganda as their selection team lost 21-5 to Zambia in the Plate Final.

Mahlubi Puzi, SA Rugby Union manger of game development, was full of praise for the champions.

"Generally, all the teams were competitive at the tournament and that augurs well for women's rugby in Africa,'' said Puzi.
