The Premier Soccer League has commended soccer followers across the country for contributing to the success of the 2006-07 season.

"It was one of the greatest seasons for us in terms of support for the beautiful game," said Andrew Dipela, PSL general manager.

He was speaking to Sowetan after Ajax Cape Town easily brushed aside Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 to clinch the Absa Cup in Durban on Saturday night.

The final, which attracted 46 000 supporters from as far as Cape Town, Mangaung, Seshego, Upington, Mafikeng and Lekazi, marked the end of the PSL season.

It was also good to see many branded fans of other Premiership clubs not featuring in the final coming on board to support the match.

"We could not have asked for a better way to end the season; the crowd that we had tonight (Saturday) was great," said Dipela after the medal presentation.

"We visited the schools and other important places like the taxi ranks in this area earlier on during the week to mobilise support.

"The atmosphere was superb. And on behalf of the league and executive committee, we would like to thank everybody who contributed to the success of 2006-2007."

Asked if the Cup of Dreams will still be retained next season, Dipela said they will be able to unveil their plans after the broadcast rights saga has been resolved.

He could not even say if the league and giant banking institution had started with initial negotiations to renew the contract of the popular tournament.
