The Eastern Cape health department has struck a R600million public-private partnership with Netcare for two hospital projects.

The department said yesterday that the deal will include refurbishing and upgrading the 219-bed Settlers Hospital in Grahamstown and the building of a 90-bed hospital in Port Alfred.

Both hospitals will also get new medical equipment. Settlers Hospital will get a new theatre complex.

The deal has a strong black and gender empowerment component.

Key areas of the hospital, including the casualty department will be managed by the private hospital group for 15 years. Full private facilities would also be set up at both the hospitals. - Sapa
