Lazio eager to win Morewa tourney
Zola Lazio, one of Soweto's top amateur soccer outfits, intend making history by becoming the first senior side to win the Clinix Stix Morewa Soccer Tournament.
The inaugural tournament got off to a flying start at the weekend with more than 300 amateur clubs affiliated to the Safa Soweto region taking part.
Lazio, who have won many development competitions in Soweto, beat Senal Oil Kliptown 3-2 in their opening match in Kliptown at the weekend.
"It was a tough game, but I was happy with the enthusiasm displayed by the boys," said Samuel Sithole, Lazio's chairman. "We are honoured to take part in this tournament, which is named after one of Africa's greatest soccer administrators [Stix Morewa]. Our plan is to become the first club to win the tournament and I have no doubt that the team I have assembled will make us proud."
Phil "Chippa" Mogodi, Safa Soweto regional chief executive, said all the categories - the seniors, Under-11s and 17s - took part.
"We have 64 clubs taking part in the seniors' category, 112 in the Under-11s and 120 Under-17s. It will be a three- month tournament.
"We would like to thank all the people who turned out at the weekend to support the opening matches.
The winners will get R12 00 and runners-up R5 000.
