Slow down there

Judging by the growing number of buses involved in collisions in the past two years, the campaign to compel bus drivers to keep to the 100kmh speed limit has not yielded much success.

On Monday, two buses collided, resulting in the death of 19 people, in an accident that has been linked to speeding.

Though we do not want to pre-empt the findings of the investigation into the accident, it is significant that the police have said that both buses might have been speeding.

It is obvious that we cannot rely on all bus drivers to voluntarily align themselves with the objectives of the national road safety campaign - hence the importance of the strict enforcement of traffic regulations.

The unsavoury fact is that some bus drivers have become as much a law unto themselves as their taxi-driving counterparts.
