WASHINGTON - A prominent US Democratic politician, with a wealth of experience in international crisis resolution, headed for Sudan yesterday as part of a goodwill mission aimed at ending the conflict in Darfur.

New Mexico governor Bill Richardson will meet with high-level Sudanese officials in Khartoum in a bid to persuade them to accept an international plan that calls for deploying a joint AU-UN peacekeeping force to stem violence in the region, said the Save Darfur Coalition.

Last August, the UN's security council approved a resolution calling for a new 17300-strong UN peacekeeping force to replace or supplement a much smaller and poorly equipped AU mission. - Sapa-AFP
