After the recent alleged gang-rape of an overseas visitor on the Durban beachfront, an unnamed source from the hospitality industry was quoted as saying in part, "but what were they thinking going for a walk at that time of night?".

The remark was of course irresponsible and insensitive because it appears to partly blame the victim and her male companion for inviting the alleged crime.

People should be able to walk freely at any time and anywhere in South Africa, without fear of being attacked. This alleged victim was not even walking alone.

Is the person saying that the Durban beachfront is a "no go" and dangerous area at certain times?

Whoever said this owes all women an apology for his or her uncalled for remark.
