Valiant efforts must reward all

It is common knowledge that the government drive to redress the legacy of past education system inequalities is largely still a work in progress.

The government itself has been sensitive to the magnitude of this challenge, prioritising scarce resources from the Budget towards the attainment of this goal.

Targeting rural schools for development has been central to this massive regeneration exercise because peri-urban and farm communities were the most disadvantaged.

But it is huge let-down to learn that this exercise has not achieved the desired results at one rural school - Kgononyane High School in Ganyesa, North West.

As reported in this newspaper yesterday, Kgononyane is a fully resourced school which had received special attention from the provincial government for improvement.

But all government efforts made to create a model school out of Kgononyane had disappointingly come to naught.

The school's administration, teaching staff and pupils spat at the efforts by thanking the provincial education authorities with one pass out of 650 pupils.

To say the school rested on its laurels would be a great understatement. Hence we fully agree with authorities that heads must roll. The school's principal and his staff must be held accountable.
