Rather jail real crooks instead of Thibedi

I want to thank Sowetan for the articles it carried on Tuesday of high-ranking politicians and business people who have been jailed for one reason or the other.

I want to thank Sowetan for the articles it carried on Tuesday of high-ranking politicians and business people who have been jailed for one reason or the other.

Our constitution is very clear when it comes to issues of corruption and our justice system bears testimony to that. Since 1994 South Africa has been serious about dealing with corruption, criminals, theft and fraud.

The convictions and jailing of these prominent people should be a lesson to everyone that no one is above the law. I therefore salute the decisions to convict anyone who is found guilty of committing a crime.

But I totally disagree with the five-year jail sentence for Kabelo Thibedi.

If there's anyone who deserves this type of sentence, it should be certain Home Affairs officials.

They should be fired for failing the country because of their incompetency, corruption and disrespect for people who seek service from them.

In my view, instead of being jailed, Thibedi should be seriously reprimanded for what he did - and Home Affairs should also bear some responsibility for its part in Thibedi's ID mess.

Thibedi should only be placed under correctional supervision because he is not a thief, nor a murderer, nor did he engage in any corruption.

My appeal, therefore, to the powers that be is please review this unfair sentence and rather jail rapists, criminals and hijackers.
