Laboratory tests conducted on the donkey that bit a Limpopo schoolboy have established that the animal had rabies.

Given Mashele, an eight-year-old boy from the village of Mphotoane, near Mamaila, will now be tested for rabies before returning to school, a state veterinarian said.

Frantic villagers who saw the donkey attack the young boy called for help .

The animal was eventually killed with a blow from a panga.
