Free trade between the 14 countries of the Southern African Development Community would be a reality within a year, SADC chairman Pakalitha Mosisili said yesterday.

"It would appear that the region is on course for a Free Trade Area by 2008," Mosisili, the prime minister of Lesotho, said in his opening speech to an extraordinary meeting of SADC heads of state in Johannesburg.

The Free Trade Area was agreed upon in 2000. - Sapa
