SA-inspired bunny chow a hit in London

A RESTAURANT in London's vibey Soho district is all the rage right now for its South African-inspired bunny chow.

The restaurant, called Bunnychow, was this past week honoured with the "most innovative breakfast in the UK award" as part of their National Breakfast Week.

The restaurant's founder Atholl Milton told Sowetan that visits to Durban and Cape Town (and the Design Indaba) a couple of years ago inspired him to launch a pop-up store in Shoreditch, in London's East End, in mid-2013.

So popular was the idea that a full-scale restaurant was only a matter of time - and it opened in 2013.

Milton said: "The combo of a bunny and a beer was really appealing and I loved the idea of the bunny being portable, and I thought that the notion of a portable lunch would work really well in London because it's a city that is constantly on the move."

The award-winning Full English Bunny is a hollowed-out brioche loaf and comes with bacon, button mushrooms, sausage, bobotie-spiced beans, black pudding and a fried egg.

Head chef Finn Baird cures the bacon and makes the black pudding, and has to make it whenever it is requested - as the bunny is sold throughout the day.

It costs around R70.

Londoners shy away from tackling bunny chows with their hands and prefer to use forks.

Milton said their bunny chows were served in artisan loaves, which differed from the softer white loaf made in South Africa.
