Pap and morogo - served in the heart of Sandton

Honestly! They even serve Sushi made of pap and meat. And before you get any silly ideas, they don't serve it off the bodies of half-naked women.

WHOEVER decided to call this Sandton eatery Lekgotla Restaurant should have made it clear this was not just a meeting place but a food emporium that has everything for everyone.

Nestled right in Nelson Mandela Square, the eatery, with delightful African finishings, offers friendly service.

Customers can enjoy their meals while watching the imposing stature of the iconic freedom fighter.

Whether you are into sea food, African or Western cuisine, chances are you will find something to satisfy your pocket and palate.

I had no idea that I could be served pap in this very larney part of Jozi.

I am no fan of sushi and my idea of this delicacy is of raw fish and rice, but at Lekgotla, they also do it the African way. Honestly! Sushi made of pap and meat.

And before you get any silly ideas, they don't serve it off the bodies of half-naked women.

I missed out on tasting any of the sushi because of my prejudice against the Japanese dish.

It was only later when the tables had been cleared that I confronted a friend for having betrayed me by eating the dish that I was informed was sushi of a different kind.

Somehow, I felt I should lay the blame right at the door of slick businessman Kenny Kunene for having further entrenched my prejudice against the dish.

However, there was plenty of other delicious dishes to choose from and I went for the tried and tested pap and lamb stew. And as for their creamed spinach, yummy!

I am one of those people who can have spinach with anything, any time.

Because we were there as a group, the dishes were already prepared - on request by our host. There was an emphasis on African cuisine and there was enough to feed a small village (oh, I'm joking).

A peek at the menu reveals a variety of African as well as Western cuisine.

Take some of the signature dishes, for instance. Bushman's Venison Platter is ostrich sausage, venison loin and springbok medallion, served with a trio of sauces.

Or you could opt for the Kruger Mixed Grill, a platter of lamb chops, boerewors and sirloin steak served with seasonal vegetables.

Or how about Karoo Slow Roast Lamb? This is lamb which has been heated for six hours in tomato sauce, white wine and fresh herbs. It is also served with olive morogo.

Even vegetarians are spoiled for choice at Lekgotla.

There are dishes such as vegetable curry - a dish of vegetables simmered in mild Mozambican coconut milk and served with steamed jasmine rice.

The choice here is infinite, you just need a big stomach and a "happy" appetite.
