Prudence Segami is star of make-up

SHE is the genius behind countless breathtaking celebrity looks in top glossy magazines and on television shows in the country.

Now Prudence Segami, who has been making the rich and famous look more beautiful, has been appointed make-up artist for Avon cosmetics.

An experienced freelance make-up artist, Segami says her clients include a wide range of South African celebrities and personalities as well as "the girl next door for those special occasions".

The professional make-up artist and hair stylist has a very impressive résumé, with artistic origins deeply rooted in TV.

Her work is notably dramatic and hyperbolic in deploying glamour. She is renowned for creating luscious looks filled with spunk and vivaciousness.

One would think there was no room for such style in the corporate world, but Segami has made her mark among newsreaders, talk-show hosts and businesswomen.

This shows that spunk and lusciousness can still portray strength and credibility in a serious and professional environment.

"I am honoured by Avon South Africa's recognition. Being part of this globally renowned brand and a passionate team is very exciting and I am eager to expand my long-standing friendship with both," she says.

"It's very humbling and it's also something that I've always dreamt about. There will definitely be a lot of responsibility on my shoulders, but I couldn't be happier because everything that Avon stands for is what I've always loved," Segami says.

Originally from Taung in North West, Segami has had a passion for make-up, beauty and fashion since she was a young girl.

She has been a professional hair and make-up artist since 1999, after graduating from Bloemfontein College in the Free State.

Segami says she feels lucky to have landed a job at SABC TV soon after she graduated.

Sadly, she resigned from the broadcaster last year because of contract disagreements.

"I knew that I wanted to work in the entertainment industry from the day I enrolled for the hairdressing and cosmetic course," Segami says.

" It has been a very humbling and exiting journey. Working on the faces of the most celebrated people in the country is every make-up artist's dream."

She says the most exciting thing about her profession is meeting new people all the time.

"I have worked on the faces of international celebrities and heads of state. What can be better than that?" she asks.

She quickly adds that working with celebrities is not all glamour, though.

"There are a lot of prima donnas, especially in the music and TV industry. Some of them scream at you while others have a nasty attitude," says the single mother of two children.

Her brief at Avon includes working on new product launches, product, fashion and beauty shoots and shows, trade education and events and working with beauty editors.

She will continue working as a freelance make-up artist.

She has always held the Avon brand and the people behind it in high regard.

She says she uses Avon products daily.

"My latest favourite is the 24k range, which I use in my daily make-up regime and I love the results," Segami says.

What is the most valuable thing she has experienced over the last 12 years?

Segami says she has learnt over the years that even the shyest person wants to be distinct and to be set apart from the crowd.

"Even the shyest person wants to make their mark and wants to be recognised as an individual who is unique as an individual," Segami says.

"The secret is to bring out every individual's distinct characteristics."
