Having the right touch

SPA and leisure breaks have become very popular over the past few years because more and more people need to unwind from the stress of everyday life. "That's where I come in," says beauty therapist Tebogo Masisi

Masisi, who is a therapist at Phumulani Spa, a high-end spa at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rosebank, Johannesburg, is qualified to carry out a wide range of face and body treatments.

She has received a good grounding in the world of beauty, having worked in many salons.

"Working at the Hyatt Regency has allowed me to work with corporate types, management professionals, housewives, businesspeople and celebrities, among others," she says.

Masisi believes that her friendliness and honest, down-to-earth advice is what draws clients back for more treatments.

Since she graduated from Camelot International in 2000, she has become an expert in providing innovative services that focus on stress and environmental factors that affect mind and body.

She says the training also fuelled her fascination with and knowledge of the body and how it functions.

Masisi has a host of impressive diplomas in beauty. These include Swedish massage, bacteriology, Hawaiian massage, skin care therapy, anatomy and physiology, manicure and pedicure, nail technology and waxing.

She says she continually updates her knowledge and skills by regularly attending training courses around the country.

"I have been inspired by the aesthetic since I was very young. I chose to go to beauty school because I had a love for beauty since I was a little girl. I became a beauty therapist because I believe in helping to heal people.

"There is still a lot to learn, so I attend beauty courses all the time," Masisi says.

She says the road to where she is today has been a very long and hard one.

"But now that I have arrived at this place in my life, I can look back and appreciate every hurdle, roadblock and adversity I encountered along the way," Masisi says.

She is also an expert on make-up application, using internationally acclaimed, professional products. She says her clients love the universal contour wrap for its tightening and toning effects on the body.

When Masisi, who lives in Hillbrow, isn't helping clients unwind from stress, she keeps her own mind and body healthy by exercising.

Her dream is to start an establishment to train aspiring beauty therapists.

What treatment does she enjoy to perform the most?

"I love to give massages for relaxation because people tell me that I'm very good at it. For me, massage is not just a science, it is a gift," Masisi says.

What does she love most about her job?

"I love interacting with my clients and I feel rewarded by helping people and seeing the beneficial results of my work," says Masisi.
