DJ Cleo and the Teddy Bears split up

WHILE chasing his dream of being a goalkeeper, DJ Cleo may have compromised his music business.

Cleo recorded some of the best summer hits with the Teddy Bears, hits such as Follow Me, Impempe and Hlokoloza. Their collaborations breathed new life into kwaito. But yesterday, the charismatic hitmaker confirmed that he parted ways with the kwaito quartet "on good terms".

Cleo told Sowetan: "They left in November because at the time I was already in contract negotiations for [playing] soccer. Back then I thought I would not be in music for long. Besides, my intentions were to just focus on me [as an artist] ... to reignite the brand. But I am fully back now."

He has since ditched the soccer field to diversify his business portfolio to include managing footballers under DCF Sport.

He said he already had three players under his care but could not name them as they were still in contract negotiations.

Singer Lindo "Shoti" Sithole, speaking for the foursome, said there was no wrangling as it had earlier been reported.

"It is not like he did not want us to leave. He was busy with other things in his life. Our timing was wrong for wanting to leave at that time. We left on good terms with the company because we know that we might work with him again in future."

They are now with the recording wing of Content Connect Africa. Mamokete Qangule of Content Connect Africa confirmed the deal.
