Sanaa Africa festival to showcase the continent’s talent

As the world prepares to celebrate Africa day on the 25th of May, Sanaa Africa has once again planned a three-day cultural festival to celebrate the continent’s arts and culture.

The festival which will be taking place from the 22 to the 24 of May 2014 will showcase the continent’s best in music, fashion and arts.

This year, SA’s young fashion designer Sylvester Falata will have his very own Xhosa and Setwana inspired dress on display during the festival.

“I decided on the two cultures because I’m Xhosa but I grew up speaking Setswana so I thought it would be a great idea to merge the two,” says Falata.

Other designers who will be showcasing their garments during the festival are Thula Sindi, Mustafa Hassanali (Tanzania), Paledi Segapo and Palesa Mokubung amongst others.

“I love taking part in such events as they help to raises awareness of African fashion and dispels myths of African prints being only way to do African outfits,” Falata says.

“There are so many textures and colours one can play around with and we need to show that.”

Falata who is known for being the man behind songstress Lira’s beautiful gowns believes that by using the best of what Africa has to offer, the continent’s designers will soon see more and more of their creations on the world famous red carpets.

“Now more than ever it’s possible, Africa is becoming the cool kid, he says.
