Zungu rules gospel scene

SENSATIONAL young gospel artist Thina Zungu proved his musical prowess on Sunday night when he scooped two awards at the glittering fifth SABC Crown Gospel Awards in Durban.

Zungu, who has only two albums to his name, was voted as the best song writer and also scooped the best gospel song award for Kwanqaba'umusa.

Zungu humbled the likes of Ntokozo Mbambo, Israel Mosetla and Kgotso Makgalema.

"After my fans overwhelmingly voted for me, I don't dare disappoint them. I promise to make them proud next year.

"I have set myself a standard that I will have to maintain," he said.

"I feel great. Though I hoped to win at least one award after being nominated in three categories, I was really not expecting to win the best gospel song award as I was pitted against experienced musicians who have been in the music industry for a long time. Most of them were artists I grew up listening to and looked up to. I am over the moon. God is great," he added.

Another big winner on the night, was Mbambo, who scooped the best female and the best gospel artist categories.

There were 31 categories this year.

The awards were attended by big names in the gospel music industry such as Rebecca Malope, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Thobekile Mkhwanazi, Lundi Tyamara, Jabu Hlongwane and a host of television and radio personalities from across the country and the continent. First ladies Nompumelelo Zuma and Thobeka Mabhija-Zuma were also there.
