Skilled swimmers

A PINNIPED is a carnivorous aquatic mammal. There are three main groups of pinnipeds: seals, sea lions and walruses.

They may be clumsy on land, but in the water they are highly skilled swimmers, in fact, they spend most of their lives in the water.

Their name comes from "pinni" meaning "finned" and "ped" meaning "footed", so they are fin-footed.
