Traditional Music awards - The winners

Star guests included Nambitha Mpumlwana, Thamsanqa Nmgqolo, Melusi Yeni and Sophie Ndaba

The glitz and glamour of the South African Traditional Music Achievement awards hit the Eastern Cape this weekend as the red carpet was rolled out on Saturday night for some of the biggest stars in the game at the East London International Convention Centre.

Traditional music lovers from around the country gathered to show their support for the nominees and eventual prize winners.

The Eastern Cape did not disappoint with Port St. Johns singer Ntombethongo taking home the best IsiXhosa award.

The best newcomer artist award went to Eastern Cape poet Tornado, with Umhlobo Wenene’s Lavuth’ibhayi won the Best traditional music radio programme award.

Popular DJ Saba Mbixane was crowned the best traditional DJ and in the new category best reggae award went to the artist Nathi B from East London.

Some of the big name stars in attendence included Generations cast members Nambitha Mpumlwana who portrays the tough Mawande; Thamsanqa Nmgqolo who plays the cute, gay Senzo; the heartthrob Melusi Yeni who plays Pheko; Sophie Ndaba who plays the ‘darling’ Queen and Mawande’s son MJ played by Anga Makubelo.

The night was a success and Eastern Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet pledged to hold the Satmas for at least the next five years in the province
