ALL WINNERS: Carefully selected entrants for the new Miss Joburg pageant.

A NEW Miss Joburg pageant will be launched at the Zar in Sandton on August 27, with the aim to help empower young women.

Pageant director Gloria Ngwenya said Miss Joburg would feature young, talented women who were both sexy and intelligent.

"We will carefully select people who are ambitious and business-minded women. We want people who stand out in their respective communities and have chosen social paths, as well as competing to be crowned Miss Joburg."

Ngwenya said the main event would be staged on October 1 at the Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein. Interested candidates must be between 18 and 27 years of age.

"We hope to use Miss Joburg to change the perception about beauty pageants. We want to embark on this mission to use pageants as a way to create jobs for our participants."

Sihle Ntsele, also a pageant organiser said: "We hope to sustain Miss Joburg and use it as a pilot project for job creation."

She said some of the benefits the Miss Joburg winner would receive included business management, negotiation and business writing skills.

The winner will walk away with a Mini Cooper, an iPod, a plasma screen, laptop, beauty spa vouchers, a getaway cruise vacation, a contract of employment and shopping vouchers.
