Earth, Wind and Fire

LEGENDARY trumpeter Hugh Masekela will share the stage with another international act on March 27.

Masekela, who joined Irish rock band U2 on stage last month, will perform alongside R&B and jazz-funk band Earth, Wind and Fire at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg, as part of the group's 40th anniversary world tour.

Established in 1969, the band created a new sound that fused pop, jazz, funk and R&B. Their sound was progressive but appealed to a broad audience.

They were championed by Quincy Jones and the late Miles Davis, and continue to influence artists like Will. I. Am, Outkast, Angie Stone, Mary J Blige and countless others.

The outfit dropped its eponymous seven-track album in 1970, which was followed by The Need of Love. Since then, the group has released more than 30 albums.

Their first gold album, Head to the Sky, was released in 1973. In 1977, the multi-platinum-selling record All 'n All, won three Grammy awards.

Like any other band, Earth, Wind and Fire have been through many challenges.

But their message of universal harmony has, however, earned them a following around the world.

In 1983, Maurice White, the leader, decided the band needed a break. They reunited again with the band in 1987 and released Touch the World.

After that, the group embarked on a nine-month world tour that was followed by the release of The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire Vol II in 1988.

In 2000, the nine-piece 1970s edition of Earth, Wind and Fire reunited for one night only in honour of their induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The group will be touring until September this year. Tickets are available at Computicket and range in price from R210 to R800.
