Underground strike ends at Amplats

The underground strike at Anglo American Platinum's (Amplats) Tumela Mine, in Amandelbult, Limpopo, has ended, the company said.

The workers went to surface on Thursday night, said company spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole.

The 169 workers started staging a sit in underground on Monday, demanding to see managers to discuss grievances relating to bonuses.

Workers also reported for duty on Friday at Amplats, in Rustenburg, North West, after an earlier threat to embark on a wildcat strike over looming retrenchments.

"We are waiting for the final word this weekend. We want the company to reverse it decision to retrench 6000 workers," said workers' committee chairman Gaddafhi Mdoda.

Plans for a the strike were suspended on Thursday.

The committee said that if Amplats could not run the mines it should surrender them to another company which would save jobs.

Amplats has announced that it will cut 6000 jobs instead of the 14,000 it predicted earlier.

The workers committee led a strike last year demanding a monthly salary of R16,000.
