Malema associate 'shocked' at tax inquiry

TOP Limpopo businessman Steve Bosch says he has been taken by surprise at the charges against him by the SA Revenue Services (Sars).

Sars has charged Bosch, who has close links with expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema, with failure to pay taxes in at least 25 of the companies he was linked to.

Bosch, his current and former business associates, have been summoned to appear before a tax inquiry in Pretoria, to be questioned "under oath" regarding tax matters.

The inquiry, scheduled to begin on November 12 and end on November 30, will be held in terms of the provisions of sections 50 and 51 of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011.

Bosch has been ordered to bring documents, that include bank statements for each bank account, to the inquiry.

Sowetan has seen the document listing the companies Bosch has been linked to.

It shows that Bosch is being charged with non-compliance in his SBNP Family Trust and the 25 companies in relation to tax matters.

The document also indicates that Bosch had not paid income tax and also did not declare the true amounts of taxable income in the income tax returns submitted.

Bosch, who is regarded as one of the province's most prominent construction moguls, saidyesterday that his company had undergone an audit by Sars and that everything was found to be in order.

"I find this [tax inquiry] to be shocking, that the information requested from me was submitted within the given deadline via my accountants.

'A signed letter of acknowledgement of receipt was also forwarded to me," Bosch said.

He said he had an "in-house" accountant who made sure that everything was up to standard.

Bosch said what was more surprising was that he was summoned to the inquiry "a few months" after he had submitted the very same documents.

He said some of the companies listed were either dormant or de-registered or had never been active.

Asked if he thought the inquiry was a political witch hunt based on his associations with Malema, Bosch said: "I don't believe it's a political witch hunt. I have confidence in Sars and I am willing to cooperate with them on whatever is needed."
