CAF to punish Chiefs for bad behaviour

KAIZER Chiefs could incur the wrath of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after the African Champions League match against AS Vita Club at FNB Stadium.

The continental body has a dim view of pitch invasions and aggressive actions directed at match officials, and is expected to throw the rule book at Chiefs after the club's players joined their fans last Saturday in confronting Namibian referee Rainhold Shikongo.

The CAF interclub committee will meet in Cairo on April 24 to decide on the action to take against the Glamour Boys.

Safa president Danny Jordaan, who serves on several committees in the continental body, will attend the meeting as an adviser to his CAF counterpart, Issa Hayatou.

Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble said they had not received communication from CAF about the matter.

"Their competitions department would write to us about such an incident. I would not be surprised if they do come to us," said Mumble.

Chiefs general manager Bobby Motaung said they had not been contacted yet.

"I cannot comment because nothing has come to us," he said.

After bombing out of the Champions League 3-2 on aggregate, Chiefs will now take part in the less alluring Confederation Cup when facing Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast over two legs in a playoff for the group stages this month.

Amakhosi have an uneasy relationship with the CAF and were fined after they refused to play in Madagascar in 2002.

Chiefs were slapped with a three-year ban and R9840 fine for refusing to play in the CAF Cup in 2005.
