Tshwane mayor fighting for Kanana community

TSHWANE mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa's spokesman, Blessing Manale, says the municipality will be challenging the court decision.

"We believe that the court should also rule on the entitlement of the Kanana community to continue to reside on the farm," says Manale.

"The court should have interdicted the individuals who are threatening to [drive] the Kanana community off the land. We will support the action of the community. The municipality is pursuing the ownership issue in the highest court of the land. We have offered temporary relief services, in the form of water tanks and toilets.

"A task team has been established to deal with all land ownership and development issues city-wide as a matter of priority," says Manale. "As the city we regret that we have private landowners who believe that they can simply evict communities from land they had occupied and worked on for years."
