Idols season brings a laugh a minute

IT'S been a laugh a minute and drama galore in Idols SA Season 9.

M-Net spokeswoman Lani Lombard said that although the audition tour was over, there was just far too much silliness, craziness and sheer talent to be contained in only three episodes.

They have put the best of the rest together to be shown in a special tonight - Idols Director's Cut.

It seems Durban had the craziest lot of contestants.

Last week, a pretty young thing in an itsy-bitsy bikini was told to lose weight by Gareth Cliff. And then there's the mystery of the briefcase from which Luyanda Zondi pulled an unidentified item.

It's apparently so nasty that the producers have decided not to say what it was, for fear of upsetting sensitive viewers. Or so they say.

But back to the beach bunny in a bikini. Dominique Horn (17) had more than an Idols crown in mind when she went to audition.

Wearing a heavy black coat, she shocked everyone when she took it off to reveal scraps of material that looked two sizes too small.

She admitted that she was hoping to score a date with Cliff because she had "the biggest crush on him".

But the DJ, who never minces his words, told the young hopeful to lose weight. He then proceeded to draw on her middle section, the area where he thought she could shed some kilos.

"Bands to make her dance, chicks clapping and they ain't using hands," he sang in response to Dominique. As for her singing abilities. she failed to impress.

But she has no hard feelings.

"Gareth was a bit harsh and broke my heart a bit, but I forgive him as he was just giving critical advice," she said.

This wasn't the first time Dominique tried to show her love for Cliff.

"I entered Idols last year with my friend and we wore convict outfits and sang I Will Always Love You. I kissed Gareth, and it broke me that the judges didn't remember me from last year and it was a pretty awkward situation." You think? She has vowed to keep entering until she turns 30.

"I guess it's also an empowering moment for a woman to do something this crazy," she said.

Then there's Vincent Jakson Makoko, who prefers being called Michael Jackson. He has become a permanent fixture at the auditions. Last year the judges sent him into the streets to see how much money he could earn.

And the judges probably wished they could throw Chane Mngoma out on the street. Mngoma, who believes he sounds better with his hands held over his ears, assaulted Randall Abrahams's own covered ears with his voice.

Tonight, catch the operatic performer who has Unathi Msengana crying with laughter, while host ProVerb completely loses it on air!

Idols SA airs on M-Net and Mzansi Magic at 5.30pm.
