Misfiring Cosmos succumb to vibrant Arrows

Missing star striker Charlton Mashumba, Jomo Cosmos never had the firepower to truly trouble Lamontville Golden Arrows who enjoyed the freedom to edge a 1-0 advantage over their relegation-threatened opponents.

Cosmos now face Maritzburg United who moved up to second second-last place last night with a 1-0 home win against Ajax Cape Town.

The results last night set up one of the biggest relegation matchups in recent memory as the two teams meet in their final game in Potchefstroom on May 21.

Promoted Cosmos needed a victory to ensure their survival. Last night's result means the relegation battle between Cosmos, Maritzburg United and University of Pretoria is going to the wire.

Tuks' last game is against Arrows in Pretoria.

With Mashumba having picked up an injury after scoring the winner in Ezenkosi's 1-0 win against AmaTuks two matches previously, Jomo Sono's team had been left without much-needed punch up-front.

Arrows, generally on the ascendancy as they pushed for a victory that could be crucial earning Clinton Larsen's team a top eight place, produced a winner through defensive stalwart Musa Bilankulu's volley a minute into first-half injury time. Arrows could not quite run Ezenkosi ragged, but did have enough superiority to have justified a single-goal win.

Ezenkosi's attacking pair of Linda Mntambo and Mxolisi Macuphu, with two league goals between them, seemed unlikely to produce a goal.
