Komphela stays put

Kaizer Chiefs fans calling for Steve Komphela to get fired should forget it.

Speaking at the opening of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton yesterday, ahead of Saturday's Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, Chiefs owner Kaizer Motaung gave an example of how Pitso Mosimane had turned things around at Mamelodi Sundowns after some fans had called for the former Bafana Bafana coach to be axed early in the season.

Amakhosi are without a trophy this season after two cup final defeats.

They have also been inconsistent in the Absa Premiership, leading to some within their faithful to criticise Komphela's regime.

But Chiefs management is not pressing panic buttons, and a defeat in the Soweto derby Pirates on Saturday will not trigger any hasty reaction either.

"I don't think we are supposed to react to any situation that happens now. If we do that, then obviously we do not know what we are doing," Motaung said.

He was addressing reporters after participating in the historic opening of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, which he did alongside Jomo Sono and Irvin Khoza.

"Just to make an example, Pitso Mosimane, two or three months ago, was perceived by some of the Sundowns supporters as useless for the team. He was pelted with all sorts of missiles. Where is he today? He is on top of the log and has one trophy already.

"So it does not necessarily mean when a team goes into a slump, for whatever reason, we have to single out one individual. If you are going to fire a coach it must be based on fact and proper analysis of what his weaknesses are.

"In fact, the challenge we have as clubs in this country is that we need to educate our supporters.

"As far as Chiefs is concerned, we are not going to react based on the result.

"We have to react based on the performance of the team in general and everything else that goes with it," he said.

Motaung added that fans should stop being too emotional.

"As much as we understand that people get emotional and impatient sometimes, they have to understand. When peopl are too emtional, they are not rational."

Komphela has not given up on defending Amakhosi's title, despite a run of inconsistent results.

Chiefs need a run of good results, starting with the derby, if they are to catch up with Downs at the top.

"Some of you will remember that when we brought Stuart [Baxter] we were under a lot of pressure. People were saying why are we bringing this guy because he failed with Bafana. It's not wise to react on the basis of what people are saying but rather act responsibly," Motaung added.
