Igesund ‘in a good space’ after shaky start to the season

Not too long ago‚ SuperSport United coach Gordon Igesund was teetering on the brink of joblessness after the club’s poor start to the season.

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter was linked with Igesund’s job‚ as Matsatsantsa dropped points where many would have expected them to win‚ such as the home defeat to Golden Arrows and the goalless draw with Jomo Cosmos also at home.

However‚ things have turned around for Igesund and his men‚ who are now in the top eight having gone five matches without defeat. With 12 points out of a possible 15‚ SuperSport are now 10 points behind leaders and Tshwane rivals Mamelodi Sundowns going into the Christmas break.

They finished the year off with a 2-0 victory over struggling rivals University of Pretoria‚ with goals from defenders Michael Boxall and Clayton Daniels.

“I am happy where we are. We are in a good space‚” Igesund said.

“We are unbeaten in five. And all the three games we have won were away from home. You don’t go to Ajax and beat Ajax easily. You don’t go to Chippa and win easily. You don’t come to Tuks and win easily. We are scoring goals and we are keeping clean sheets. The team is now starting to gel. We had many new players coming into the team. The spirit is fantastic and the players are fighting for each other.”

Igesund claims he was never worried about losing his job despite the club’s poor form and believed they would turn things around.

“I have been in this game for a long time. I have had over 1000 games. When things were not going well‚ everybody was having a go at me. But when things don’t go well‚ you have to stay calm and give the players confidence. You do not become a bad coach over night. We are in seventh place (actually eighth) and it’s not even halfway through the season. So we will see how things go. I trust my players.”

SuperSport will next face struggling Maritzburg United on January 10‚ eager to keep moving up the standings.
