Eagles give Mphela new wings

He has won major trophies in top-flight football and is on the wrong side of 30 but Katlego Mphela's desire to succeed has not diminished.

The former Bafana Bafana, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs striker would love to return to the Absa Premiership, but only with the club he is currently playing for, Royal Eagles in the National First Division.

"When I came here I sat down with the chairman and he told me his ambitions. For me it was a challenge.

"If I go back to the PSL then I want to go back with the same team. I'd like to help this team go to the PSL," Mphela told the media after his side held second-placed Baroka FC to a 2-2 draw at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Mphela was not on the score sheet against Baroka, as youngster Siyabonga Ngubo scored a brace to secure a valuable point away from home for Eagles, who are in eighth place at the moment.

Mphela said he has not set a goals target this season and is happy to see others get on the score sheet, as long as they are winning matches and conceding less goals.

Eagles have let in 10 goals in their seven matches so far.

"I think the team that concedes less has the best chance of winning promotion because I can score 20 goals and we finish mid-table. So it does not really matter [how many he scores]. I'd rather have defenders who score goals and we win matches.

"We just have to make sure that we concede less goals."

Cape Town All Stars, meanwhile, returned to the top of the table for the first time in a month after they edged promoted Mthatha Bucks 1-0 at Athlone Stadium.

Santos registered their first win of the season, beating African Warriors 2-1 at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, while Black Leopards were edged 1-0 by AmaZulu at Princess Magogo Stadium on the same day.

Lidoda Duvha were without coach David Bright, who is suspended after claiming that there's interference at the club.
