He didn't join Wits to retire

It didn't take Moeneeb Josephs too long after he collected the PSL goalkeeper of the season award on Sunday to say he would swap it for domestic honours with his club, Bidvest Wits.

In typically frank manner, the player nicknamed "Slim Kat" argued that the Clever Boys would have pushed Absa Premiership champions Kaizer Chiefs right down to the wire if they had taken crucial matches against league minnows more seriously.

"A lot of people say I left Orlando Pirates and came to Wits to retire. Not at all. I came here to achieve things because this is an ambitious team," he said. "Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for winning the award, but to me it means more if we achieve as a team. We brought in a lot of young players and most of them thought you only do well when you beat the big teams. You win the league when you grind out results against the minnows too."

He added: "When you go to Free State Stars and come back with a win, that's where you win the league. We never got that right this season."

Towards the end of the league campaign, when they could still have mathematically caught up with Chiefs, Wits dropped points against AmaZulu, Polokwane City and Chippa United.

Josephs said that with a three-time league winner in charge, Wits should always be among the cup winners every season. "If you win a game 1-0, Gavin Hunt wants to win 3-0. That's his mentality and it rubs off on the players. He's a championship-winning coach and he has been working on ways for us to win this league and he's gone on holiday now, but I am sure he's not enjoying it."
