Khumalo spurs youngsters to victory

While most European leagues are on a winter break, action continued in England and Scotland this weekend, where a number of South Africans played for their respective sides.

There was no Steven Pienaar for Everton as they held champions Manchester City to a 1-1 draw, while Bongani Khumalo featured again for Tottenham Hotspur's under-21 side.

Khumalo is captain of the team, which is allowed three overage players, and helped them to a comprehensive 3-1 win at West Ham United.

He will aim to prove his fitness this week and possibly win a loan move away from White Hart Lane for the final six months of his contract with the north London club.

Andrew Surman played for English Championship leaders Bournemouth as they let a lead slip to lose 2-1 at home to the Johannesburg-born midfielder's former club, Norwich City.

Kgosi Ntlhe played his first game in three weeks as English League One side Peterborough United lost 2-0 at home to Colchester.

It was a 13th appearance of the season for the 20-year-old left back after he had fallen out of favour over the Christmas period.

Three South African-born players started for Scottish Championship side Livingston in their 1-1 draw with Cowdenbeath on Saturday.

The Jacobs brothers, Kyle and Keaghan, as well as Burton O'Brien all played for the struggling side, who remain five points from the relative safety of the relegation play-off position.

A third Jacobs brother, Devon, played for fourth-tier Berwick Rangers, a club actually based in England, as they won 3-0 at Clyde to stay in contention for the promotion play-offs.
