Lions a Sunfoil test for in-form Cobras

WHILE the Proteas get their first Test cricket action since August under way in Centurion against the West Indies today, provincial sides will also return to the longer format tomorrow.

Last Friday the Cape Cobras were crowned Ram Slam Twenty20 champions after defeating a gallant Knights side by 33 runs in the final of the competition at Newlands.

The Cobras have been in fine form, dancing to the tune of their charmer coach Paul Adams throughout the campaign that saw them suffer only one defeat in the 11 matches they played in the T20 competition.

It will be a different story, though, when they return to Newlands tomorrow to take on the Highveld Lions as the Sunfoil series four-day competition resumes.

Two rounds of matches in the series were played prior to the start of the T20 tournament, but the Cobras have not participated yet.

The last time the Cobras played the four-day game was when they claimed a second successive title against the Lions in April this year.

As they look for their hat-trick, the Cape side will be hoping to continue riding the wave of their fine form from last season and the T20 competition.

The Knights will be keen to pick up where they left off.

The T20 runners-up lead the table standings after having won both their matches in the campaign and remaining the only unbeaten side - bar the Cobras and Dolphins, who have not played yet.

The Knights face the Titans in Bloemfontein.

The Warriors will begin a new era.

The Eastern Cape side will take to the field for the first time under the tutelage of 34-year-old new coach Malibongwe Maketa.

The former Warriors assistant took over the reins last week from Piet Botha, who stepped down after a series of pitiable results. Maketa's first task will be against the Dolphins in Pietermaritzburg.
