GREAT START: Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba

CONTINUITY has not been a feature of Bafana Bafana teams in the past as they have kept an unchanged side on just 10 occasions in 312 matches since readmission to international football in 1992.

National team coach Shakes Mashaba will be forced into at least two changes for Saturday's clash with Sudan after the tragic death of goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa and suspension of defender Thulani Hlatshwayo. But he is no stranger to tinkering in any event, having used 19 players in his four games in charge during this spell at the helm.

The most recent occasion of an unchanged line-up for the national side was at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations when Gordon Igesund kept the same team for the second and third pool matches against Angola and Morocco.

Before that, Carlos Alberto Parreira gave Mexico a glimpse of the side that would play the opening game of the 2010 Fifa World Cup when he fielded the same side in a 1-0 friendly win over Denmark just days before the meeting with the Central Americans. Clive Barker kept the same starting line-up for two games in a row on four occasions, including the first two games of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.

The team that qualified South Africa for the 1998 World Cup in France with a 1-0 win over Congo was also unchanged from the match before, a 3-0 success over Zambia.

Trott Moloto kept the same team for matches at the 2000 Nations Cup finals, while Jomo Sono kept the same side for the 3-2 loss to Spain at the 2002 World Cup finals after Bafana had beaten Slovenia 1-0.
