AFTER giving his backing to under-fire coach Ernst Middendorp yesterday, Bloemfontein Celtic chairman Max Tshabalala warned the German to control his temper.

Middendorp is notorious for his outbursts on the touchline and in the media and has now been called to order by Tshabalala, who feels the coach's inability to curb his temper is putting players under pressure.

"We had a meeting with the coach about his temper. We told him that this is South Africa and we live in the spirit of ubuntu. We told him that he is putting the team under pressure. He apologised and said he will work on his temper and you will see the change in the coming matches. He has to respect the players and they will also respect him," Tshabalala said yesterday.

It's been a horrible start to the season for Celtic, who are third from bottom with just one victory in seven matches in the league and having endured the pain of first-round exits in the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout.

Under-fire Middendorp will confront the next few weeks with Clinton Larsen proving an unnerving presence on the fringes.

Larsen, who left Celtic a year ago, is currently with third tier club Roses United, Celtic's sister club, and is heavily linked with a return to the club he enjoyed a good three years with before an exit under the old management early last season.

"People are speculating with our coach. Clinton is employed at Roses United, our feeder team. Clinton is not waiting for anyone's job. He is doing well with Roses," said Tshabalala.

"Middendorp gave me his plan and I bought into it. He told me he wanted attacking players, but we did not have attacking players. Now we have managed to get some players. We got Lethola Mofokeng, Mukuka Mulenga and Jacky Motshegwa. They are all attacking players. I cannot fire the coach before I give him a chance to work with the players we have got for him now."

Tshabalala took over at Celtic at the start of the season and introduced win bonuses for the players, hoping it will motivate them.

"Each player gets R10000 when we win. I believe this should encourage them to win more games. If they win four matches in a month, then they do not even have to touch their normal salaries. They can even invest the money. It should motivate them."
