BLOEMFONTEIN Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb was forced to apologise to his teammates yesterday for his amateurish behaviour during Sunday's Absa Premiership match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns emerged 1-0 victors after a terrible mistake by defender Wandisile Letlabika allowed Elias Pelembe to score the match's only goal.

Following Letlabika's error, Tignyemb became so upset with the midfielder that he charged at him. In a moment of sheer madness, an enraged Tignyemb furiously pushed and shoved Letlabika who was visibly upset about his error, and yelled at him. For a moment, it looked like the two men would get into a physical fight, until defender Bevan Fransman stepped in and separated them.

Celtic chairman Max Tshabalala yesterday hauled the temperamental goalkeeper before the club's disciplinary committee and in the presence of all his teammates, the Cameroonian was told to apologise.

"He apologised to the whole team for the unfortunate incident during the game on Sunday. We met in the morning and the guys accepted his apology. We have now put this matter behind us and are looking to the future," Tshabalala said.

Fadlu Davids, Celtic's assistant coach who was in charge on Sunday while head coach Ernst Middendorp was serving a suspension, said after the match that the amateurish manner in which Tignyemb dealt with the matter was inexcusable. Davids said while they encouraged their players to give optimum performances, Tignyemb's conduct, watched by about 10000 supporters and millions across the country on television, was unacceptable.

"It is an internal matter, but definitely we could have handled it in a better way. The emotions of the game are high and we ask the players not to put it out there. We expect it from Patrick [Tignyemb] on one hand, but on the other hand, not in front of the supporters and the media," Davids said. selebim@sowetan.co.za
