IT IS all systems go for the North American Boxing Federation cruiserweight title fight between holder Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu and challenger Garrett "The Ultimate Warrior" Wilson at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut on September 20.
This was announced by promoter Kathy Duva, the chief executive of Main Events, which guides the career of the KwaZulu-Natal boxer rated No 2 by the WBC, seventh by the IBF and 10th by the WBO.
"The fight will be broadcast as the main event on a special afternoon edition of NBC Fight Night," said Duva who added that her company will jointly stage the bout with Peltz Boxing and Showpony Promotions.
Mchunu, the 26-year-old left-hander from KwaXimba in Pietermaritzburg, and Wilson were scheduled to meet on January 24 but the American pulled out due to an injured achilles tendon, revealed Duva who then matched Mchunu with Olanrewaju Durodola for the NABF belt. Mchunu won that bout on points.
"Fans are excited that the fight between Thabiso and Wilson is finally scheduled to take place next month," said Duva.
Mchunu, a former SA, WBA Pan African and African Boxing Union undefeated titlist, will be making his third appearance on Fight Night. The fighter trained in Fourways, Johannesburg, by Sean Smith, has 16 wins, including 11 KOs, against one loss.
"I'm going to take Garret Wilson where he has never been before," warned Mchunu, while Smith said Wilson has never fought anybody like Mchunu.
