Series 'needs Wallaby win'

THE Rugby Championship, which begins in Sydney on Saturday, needs Australia to beat the All Blacks to give it a shake- up.

That's according to South Africa, New Zealand and Australian Rugby (Sanzar) chief executive Greg Peters, speaking shortly before the four-nation tournament enters its third staging.

Since the inclusion of Argentina in 2012, New Zealand have dominated even more comprehensively than they did in the Tri-Nations era.

In the 16 Tri-Nations seasons between 1996-2011 the All Blacks won 50 out of 72 games for a 69% winning ratio.

Currently the All Blacks have won 12 out of 12 matches in this format, underlining how they are becoming more dominant.

South Africa have won six out of 12 with five losses (four to the All Blacks, one to Australia) and one draw against Argentina in the Rugby Championship.

Australia have won five and lost seven, with one victory out of eight matches against the All Blacks and Springboks while the Pumas have yet to win a game. Peters believes the tournament would benefit from a Wallaby victory in Sydney on Saturday to give it a boost.

"The tournament needs Australia to get back to where they were a few years ago," Peters said. "If they could get a positive result against the All Blacks it will add spice to the competition."
